2009 Report Summary
Iowa promoted SARE programming by presenting at 7 events, providing 7 consultations
and over 84 press releases through interviews and using web and electronic systems.
Iowa reported two initiatives for 2009:
(1) Building Capacity and Communities of Practice in Sustainable Agriculture and (2)
Implementing Effective Organic and Sustainable Agriculture Production and Marketing
systems and Emerging Issues. Program development partners included Iowa State
University, Conservation Districts of Iowa, Iowa Department of Natural Resources,
Leopold Center and Practical Farmers of Iowa. Seventy-eight educators answered client
questions, 22 had individual consultations, 30 developed new contacts, 32 incorporated
into programming, 17 delivered new programming, and 18 used in newsletters or other
media outlets. Fifteen travel scholarships totaling $7,073 and 6 mini-grants for a total of
$3,600 were awarded for professional development training.

2010 Plan of Work Summary
Andy Larson is the new Iowa State Sustainable Agriculture, i.e SARE Coordinator, due
to Jerry DeWitt’s retirement, July 2010. Iowa’s 2010 POW is comprised of four
initiatives: (1) Building Capacity and Communities of Practice in Sustainable Agriculture,
(2) Implementing Effective Organic and Sustainable Production and Marketing Systems,
(3) Scaling Up Local Food Systems Regional Training, and (4) Emerging Issues in
Sustainable Agriculture. Over 192 educators will receive training with 118 reporting
intermediate (behavioral) outcomes. Travel scholarships are available for Iowa
educators to assist in covering registration fees, and travel expenses to attend the
professional development workshops, conferences, field days and multi-day trainings
($11,397). Four $1,250 mini-grants for on-farm and/or applied research grants to build
educator professional capacity will also be offered to educators in Iowa.

Jerry R. DeWitt is a long-time sustainable agriculture leader at the state, regional and national levels. He was appointed Director of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2007. He also coordinates the Iowa State University Extension's Sustainable Agriculture Program and The Iowa Learning Farm. DeWitt is an accomplished photographer and has visited many farms throughout Iowa, nationally and internationally. His photographs have been published in two books: People Sustaining the Land (Vagnetti and DeWitt, 2002), and Renewing the Countryside - Iowa, a 2003 project supported by the Leopold Center.

Andy Larson is Iowa State University Extension Specialist in Small Farm Sustainability, charged with increasing the viability of Iowa’s smaller-scale, entrepreneurial farm enterprises with diversified markets and production systems. He is also serving as coordinator of the Grass-Based Livestock Working Group for the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, as well as transitioning into the role of Iowa state sustainable agriculture coordinator for the SARE Professional Development Program. Larson earned an MBA with a minor in Sustainable Agriculture from Iowa State University, also serving a term as president of the Student Organic Farm. Prior to that he worked for University of Illinois Extension’s Initiative for the Development of Entrepreneurship in Agriculture. Larson grew up on a family dairy and grain farm in Pecatonica, IL.
