2009 Report Summary
Illinois reported widespread SARE promotional activities, including a SARE presence at
over 35 different conferences and intensive support of SARE grant applicants and
projects. Partners in program development and delivery included: University of Illinois,
Michigan State University, Western Illinois University, Ohio State University, IL
Stewardship Alliance, The Land Connection, Natural Resources Conservation Service,
Growing Power, American Corn Growers and other sustainable agriculture
organizations. Primary activities included (1) Cover crop workshops for educators; (2)
Living on the Land Train the Trainer multi-day workshop, (3) twenty Sustainable Organic
Agriculture workshops at conferences and six farm tours/field days. . A total of 5 minigrants
were distributed ($8,900) in 2009 and 18 travel scholarships ($ 7,337) to support
educator participation in sustainable agriculture professional development. Outcome
evaluation results will be reported 9 months, after completion of program and outcomes
for completed activities (some from 2008) included 63 educators who answered client
questions, 18 individual consultations, 47 developed new contacts, 9 incorporated new
materials in existing programming, 2 delivered new programming, and 35 used
materials in newsletters or other media.
2010 Plan of Work Summary
Illinois 2010 POW focuses on three priority areas: (1) Cover Crops, (2) Focal Food
Systems and (3) Sustainable Organic Agriculture. 100 educators will receive training in
Cover Crops by attending one of three tours/meetings, and/or a teleconference. The
regional Scaling Up Local Food System two day workshop, follow-up webinars in IL and
travel scholarships to a national local foods conference will increase six educators
knowledge and form a team trained in local food systems. Forty nine educators will
have intermediate (behavioral) outcomes by participating in the conference, workshops,
tours or telenet series trainings for Sustainable Organic Agriculture. Seven $500
scholarships ($3,700) are available.

Deborah Cavanaugh-Grant has been the Extension Specialist for Small Farm and Sustainable Agriculture since 2006. In her role as Extension Specialist, Deborah provides statewide leadership for educational programming for commercial small farmers, managers and coordinators of various direct and alternative marketing channels, and non-commercial small acreage landowner. She also acts a coordinator for the University of Illinois Small Farms program, working with county and regional Extension personnel to deliver educational programming on a regional and statewide basis. She is also the co-facilitator of the Central Illinois Farm Beginnings Program. Deborah also serves as the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (NCR SARE) Coordinator and provides support and information about the various NCR-SARE grant programs and activities. The goal, of this publication, is to share the innovative work that Illinois NCR-SARE recipients have done over the years- answering the "so what?" question.
