2008 Report Summary
Kansas reported extensive SARE promotion, including 2 grant writing presentation. Partners in program development and implementation included Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), Kansas Department of Commerce, and Kansas Rural Center. Major initiatives included: water quality, agritourism, integrated systems, small scale food processing, and small acreage program development. A total of $4,834 was distributed through mini-grants, and $11,540 in travel scholarships were distributed to educators attending sustainable agriculture professional development opportunities. With respect to outcomes, 84 educators used information to answer client questions, 72 reported developing new contacts and partners, 51 reported including new information into ongoing programming, 27 delivered new programming, and 49 used in newsletter or other media.
2009 Plan of Work Summary
The four 2009 Kansas Plan of Work Initiatives are: 1) Food Safety and Nutritional Aspects of Local and Organic Foods, 2) Small Acreage, 3) Integrated Systems-Best Management Practices and 4) Small Scale Food Processing. Activities supporting professional development training in the focused areas include web conferences, curriculum development, publishing landowner property and natural resources inventory and resource planning worksheets, 2 Integrated Systems bus tours for 30 ag educators and a Small Scale Food Processing bus tour and workshop for 60 educators. A Kansas SARE Program Assistant will work 0.4 FTE on two of the initiatives. Twenty-five travel scholarships ($6000) and three mini-grants ($1600) from prior POW are also available for professional development opportunities.
Jana Beckman assumed the role of the Kansas SARE Coordinator for the North Central Region SARE program in 2002. She facilitates SARE-supported educator professional development in sustainable agriculture in Kansas, and promotes other SARE research and education opportunities. Jana earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Agronomy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before joining K-State Research and Extension in 2001, as the Coordinator of the Kansas Center for Sustainable Agriculture and Alternative Crops.
