2008 Report Summary
Michigan reported participation in regional extension and other sustainable agriculture meetings, as well as individual consultation with farmers applying for farmer/rancher grants as part of SARE promotional activities. The three primary initiatives in 2008 were: sustainable energy in food systems, sustainable agriculture mini-grant program, and travel scholarship program. A total of $11,700 was distributed in mini-grants, and $6,800 was distributed as travel scholarships to educators seeking further professional development. Outcomes reported by educators included: 27 answered client questions with new information, 22 developed new contacts and partners, 24 incorporated new information into existing programming, 18 delivered new programs, and 20 used in newsletter and other media. Partners in the sustainable energy in food systems program development and delivery included Iowa State University, University of Illinois, and Purdue University.
2009 Plan Of Work Summary
The four 2009 Michigan POW Initiatives are: 1) Local Food Supply Chain, 2) Sustainable Animal Production-Manure Management, 3) Transition of Farms to Organic and Sustainable Production and 4) Cover Crops. Two regional workshops, $1000 for travel scholarships and $4000 for mini-grants will provide professional development training for 30 educators in the Local Food Supply Chain Initiative. Mini-grants and travel scholarships are the main vehicles for PDP training in the other initiatives. Subcommittees within the MI SARE Advisory Council have completed position papers on each initiative and are actively seeking funding partners to leverage NCR-SARE PDP funds.
